Caterham models explained

Caterham have built the Seven in dozens of versions over the years. Here's a plain guide to the ones you'll see for sale, and what each one is like to own.

The number is the power-to-weight

Modern Caterhams are named after their power-to-weight ratio in bhp per tonne: a 270 has about 270bhp per tonne, a 620 about 620. An R after the number means the track pack (limited-slip differential, sports suspension and lightweight seats). An S means the road pack (full windscreen, hood, heater and carpets). SV means the wider chassis, which gives more room in the cabin.

Roadsport and Supersport

The classic road Sevens, usually with a Ford Sigma or Rover K-series engine. A Roadsport is the natural first Caterham: light, simple, cheap to run and huge fun. The Supersport adds a little more power and a sharper set-up. Roadsports and Supersports for sale.

270, 310 and 360

The 270 and 310 use Ford's 1.6 Sigma at 135bhp and 152bhp, and the 360 uses a 2.0 Duratec. They're the core of the modern range and very popular for road and track. Many 270Rs and 310Rs started life as race cars. 270, 310 and 360 for sale.

420R and 420S

A 2.0 Duratec at around 210bhp. Properly quick on track while staying reliable and usable on the road. The 420R also has its own race championship. 420s for sale.

620R and 620S

The top of the range: a supercharged 2.0 Duratec with over 300bhp. Spectacular, and best suited to experienced drivers. History and inspection matter more than ever at this level. 620s for sale.

Superlight, R300, R400 and R500

The lightweight, high-revving Sevens from the K-series and early Duratec years. The R500 in particular is a modern classic. Originality and engine history make a big difference to value. Superlights, R400s and R500s for sale.

Academy and race cars

The Caterham Academy is the novice race series, run in Sigma-engined cars. After their first season, Academy cars often move up through the championships or become track day cars. Ex-race cars come with a cage, extinguisher and race seats, and are the most cost-effective way into Caterham racing. Race and Academy cars for sale.
